Scotland strengthened their grip on the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League summit after Knowledge Musona produced a clinical finishing display to inspire a commanding 2-0 victory over Hardrock in a Matchday 18 clash at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday.
The veteran forward, affectionately known as the “Smiling Assassin”, delivered a masterclass in front of goal, scoring twice to hand Scottland maximum points in a highly anticipated top-of-the-table encounter.
Musona broke the deadlock in the 21st minute following a beautifully crafted team move that highlighted Scottland’s patient and purposeful approach.
A pinpoint corner from Walter Musona was flicked on by Khama Billiat, allowing Knowledge Musona to apply the finishing touch from close range.
Scottland continued to dictate proceedings and doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time. Billiat unleashed a powerful effort that crashed against the crossbar, but Musona reacted quickest to the rebound, rifling home emphatically to register his second goal of the afternoon.
The brace takes Musona’s tally for the season to seven goals, further cementing his reputation as one of the league’s most dangerous forwards.
Walter Musona and Billiat were influential throughout the contest, orchestrating attacks and constantly troubling the Hardrock defence as Scottland dominated large periods of the match.
The victory sees Scottland remain at the top of the standings with 37 points, strengthening their championship ambitions as the season enters a crucial phase.
For Hardrock, it was a disappointing afternoon as they slipped to third place on 32 points after CAPS United moved into second position with 33 points.
Scottland may be called Scottland, but on this occasion they looked more like “Shotland”, with Knowledge Musona showing exactly why he remains one of Zimbabwean football’s deadliest finishers.
Football analyst Joseph Nkani praised both teams for producing an entertaining contest.
“It was a good game. Both teams played very well and what I liked most is that it ended without violence. It was a peaceful match,” he said.
Scottland supporters were equally delighted with the result.
“We are happy as Scottland supporters. I think it is now five games without dropping points. The team is playing very well,” said one fan.
A Hardrock supporter accepted defeat while remaining optimistic about the future.
“It happens in football. There is winning and losing, and today it was not our day as Hardrock. We will do our homework to remain very competitive,” he said.
Elsewhere, Highlanders secured a 2-1 victory over Bulawayo Chiefs at Barbourfields Stadium, while ZPC Kariba and Triangle played out a 1-1 draw. Agama and CAPS United shared the spoils in a goalless encounter at Wadzanai Stadium.
