Government has intensified efforts to relocate families living under high-voltage power lines in Kariba, with the Kasese Housing Development Project set to provide safe and planned residential areas for affected households currently exposed to hazardous living conditions.
Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities, Paul Mavima made the commitment after visiting Mahombekombe, Imprisit, Ballantyne and Umtali suburbs in Kariba yesterday, where he assessed the living conditions of families residing beneath electricity transmission lines and reviewed progress on their planned relocation.
“No Zimbabwean should have to raise a family in hazardous conditions or without access to adequate housing and basic services. Government remains committed to relocating the affected families to safe, well-planned communities with access to essential infrastructure and improved living standards,” said Minister Mavima.
He said the Kasese Housing Development Project was a key intervention in addressing Kariba’s housing shortages while supporting the country’s sustainable human settlements agenda.
“The Kasese Housing Development Project, comprising over 2,100 residential stands across two phases, is a key intervention towards addressing Kariba’s housing needs while advancing the delivery of sustainable human settlements in line with Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy,” he said.
Minister Mavima said the housing sector remained central to Government’s development priorities, adding that access to decent shelter was a fundamental component of improving livelihoods and promoting inclusive growth.
“We will continue working tirelessly to ensure that every Zimbabwean has access to safe, decent and affordable housing,” he said.
The initiative is aligned with Government’s Vision 2030 objective of creating an upper-middle-income society where citizens have access to improved living conditions and sustainable communities.
As Zimbabwe continues implementing housing programmes across the country, authorities say priority will be given to vulnerable communities and families living in unsafe environments.
