THE Zanu PF Masvingo Provincial Executive Council has summoned former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi to explain social media posts attributed to him before a decision is made on his application to rejoin the ruling party.
Mzembi, who was expelled from Zanu PF in 2017, applied to rejoin the party this year. He previously served as Zanu PF Masvingo South legislator and held the portfolios of Foreign Affairs and Tourism.
Zanu PF Masvingo provincial chairperson Cde Robson Mavhenyengwa said the former legislator was expected to appear before the provincial executive to respond to posts that the party considered critical of its activities.
“We had summoned him to appear before the party provincial executive council meeting where we wanted him to explain himself over some social media posts attributed to him that were critical of the party,” said Cde Mavhenyengwa.
However, Mzembi did not attend the meeting.
Cde Mavhenyengwa said the party hoped the former minister would appear before the provincial executive at its next meeting.
“He applied to rejoin the party and during deliberations to determine his application it emerged that he was posting some undesirable social media messages, so we resolved to have him come and explain himself and we will wait for him,” he said.
The provincial chairperson also dismissed social media reports suggesting that Mzembi had already been cleared to rejoin Zanu PF.
“We only resolved to recommend the readmission of Cde Kudakwashe Gopo of Bikita, but with (Mr) Mzembi we are not done yet,” he said.
Mzembi was a senior Zanu PF member in Masvingo before his expulsion in 2017 and later left the country following political developments in November of that year.
If the Masvingo provincial leadership eventually recommends his readmission, the recommendation will be forwarded to the party’s national leadership for consideration before the process can be formalised.
For now, the provincial executive is expected to await Mzembi’s response to the issues raised before making its recommendation on his application.
