Manicaland Province has surpassed its target of 16,000 hectares under wheat, with Mutasa District emerging as one of the province’s key production hubs.
The development was confirmed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development, Professor Obert Jiri, during a tour of wheat-producing farms in Mutasa District yesterday.
Prof Jiri said the crop was in excellent condition and was progressing towards harvesting, which is expected to begin by the end of October.
“Manicaland Province has exceeded its ambitious target of 16,000 hectares under wheat, with Mutasa District emerging as a key production hub. The crop is in excellent condition and on course for harvest by the end of October,” he said.
Prof Jiri said Government would continue supporting farmers throughout the production cycle to ensure that the gains recorded in wheat production were sustained and translated into increased national food stocks.
“Government continues to support our farmers, and we are confident that Manicaland Province will make a significant contribution towards boosting our national grain reserves.
The progress recorded in Mutasa was encouraging and reflected the potential for increased wheat production in areas with suitable farming conditions and access to the necessary agricultural support,” Prof Jiri added
Meanwhile, the achievement in Manicaland is expected to contribute to the country’s wheat production drive and efforts to strengthen grain reserves through increased local production.
