Fish farming at Gwenhoro Dam in Shurugwi District is generating income for local communities, with four cooperatives harvesting about 200 kilogrammes of fish each week.
In a statement yesterday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development, Dr Obert Jiri, said 10,000 fingerlings stocked at the dam in January 2026 had started producing tangible benefits for communities.
“At Gwenhoro Dam in Shurugwi District, 10,000 fingerlings stocked in January 2026 are now delivering real benefits to communities.
The four community cooperatives were harvesting fish every week, with each cooperative averaging about 200kg per catch,”he added.
“Four community cooperatives are harvesting fish every week, averaging about 200kg per cooperative per catch, worth around US$700 in gross sales at current selling prices,” he said.
Jiri said the project was contributing to several areas of community development, including food security, household incomes and livelihoods.
“This is fisheries working for food and nutrition, household incomes and community livelihoods, turning local water resources into productive community assets,” he said.
The project comes as Government continues to promote productive utilisation of water resources and income-generating activities in communities.
Fish production provides communities with access to a source of protein while creating opportunities for households to generate income through harvesting and marketing.
