ZANU PF staff members yesterday held a belated celebration of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s birthday at the party headquarters in Harare, welcoming the First Secretary as he arrived for the ruling party’s 397th Politburo meeting.
The staff, led by party director-general Cde Thadius Chadenga, broke into song and dance as President Mnangagwa arrived at the headquarters.
The staffers sang “Happy Birthday” as the President walked towards them before Chadenga explained the reason behind the celebration.
“They want to say Happy Birthday, belated as it may be. They also want to thank you for what you have been doing for them.
“We are equally happy with our conditions of service,” said Cde Chadenga.
He later presented gifts to the President on behalf of the staff.
President Mnangagwa thanked the workers for the gesture, saying he was touched by their decision to celebrate his birthday.
“I am very happy for what you have done.
“It is good to know that I have children who think about their father. I did not expect it,” said President Mnangagwa.
The celebrations continued briefly when ZANU PF Politburo members also sang for the President after he entered the auditorium for the meeting.
The brief celebration preceded the commencement of the 397th Politburo meeting.
President Mnangagwa celebrated his birthday on September 15 in Mvurwi, with the occasion coinciding with Munhumutapa Day.
Munhumutapa Day commemorates the pre-colonial Mutapa Empire and traditional governance, with this year’s celebrations held under the theme, “Honouring the Past, Empowering the Present and Securing the Future.”
The day has since been gazetted as a public holiday, underscoring its place in Zimbabwe’s national commemorative calendar.
