CSC more than doubles daily cattle slaughter

Zimbabwe’s Cold Storage Company (CSC) has more than doubled its daily cattle slaughter capacity from approximately 50 to 120 following funding from the Mutapa Investment Fund and the refurbishment of its Bulawayo facilities.

In a statement, recently, CSC Engineering Manager, Wellington Gwanyanya, confirmed the increase, highlighting improvements to the company’s refrigeration infrastructure, which can now accommodate significantly more carcasses.

“Our refrigeration facilities now have the capacity to store 320 carcasses per day, while actual slaughter currently stands at 120 cattle per day,” said Gwanyanya.

The improved refrigeration capacity provides room for increased production as the company continues working towards the recovery of its operations and the expansion of its market reach.

“The funding from the Mutapa Investment Fund has supported the refurbishment of the Bulawayo facilities, helping CSC improve its operational capacity and strengthen its position in the country’s beef industry,” he said.

The company is also working to restore beef exports, a move that could broaden market opportunities for local producers and increase demand for cattle supplied by communal farmers.

“The ongoing improvements were part of efforts to strengthen the company’s operations and support its broader recovery programme,” Gwanyanya added

The expansion of slaughter volumes is expected to contribute to the revival of CSC’s role in the livestock value chain, linking cattle producers to processing facilities and potential export markets.

Communal farmers remain an important part of Zimbabwe’s livestock sector, and improved access to formal markets could create opportunities for them to sell their cattle through established commercial channels.
