Highlanders Football Club has been plunged into mourning following a devastating road traffic accident that claimed the lives of three of its senior executives on Thursday evening, sending shockwaves across Zimbabwean football.
Club chairman Kenneth Mhlophe, vice-chairman Fiso (Sifiso) Siziba, and treasurer Nkani Khoza died in a horrific crash along the Harare–Bulawayo Highway near Lochard, approximately 50 to 60 kilometres outside Bulawayo. An unidentified female passenger travelling with the officials also lost her life in the accident. Initial reports indicate that the group was returning from Kariba after Highlanders’ Castle Lager Premier Soccer League fixture against ZPC Kariba.
According to preliminary reports, the Ford Raptor in which the executives were travelling struck a cow before veering into the path of an oncoming coach. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn, trapping some of the occupants. Emergency services later recovered the bodies from the wreckage, while police have launched investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
The loss represents one of the darkest moments in Highlanders Football Club’s history. Mhlophe, a retired Zimbabwe National Army colonel, had been serving as the club’s chairman and was widely respected for his leadership and commitment to restoring stability at Bosso. Vice-chairman Siziba and treasurer Khoza were also regarded as key figures in the club’s administration, helping steer Highlanders through financial and organisational challenges.
The tragedy occurred just a day after Highlanders suffered a 1-0 defeat away to ZPC Kariba in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League. Club officials, players, and technical staff were left devastated upon learning of the accident, with many travelling to the crash scene as emergency services conducted recovery operations.
Messages of condolence have poured in from across the Zimbabwean football fraternity. The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) described the deaths as an immeasurable loss not only to Highlanders FC but to the entire football community, paying tribute to the executives for their dedication to the growth of the game. Clubs, supporters, former players, and football stakeholders have also expressed their sympathy to the bereaved families and the Highlanders community.
The deaths leave a significant leadership vacuum at one of Zimbabwe’s most successful and historic football clubs. Highlanders, affectionately known as Bosso, now face the difficult task of mourning three senior administrators while continuing their Premier Soccer League campaign.
Police are expected to release further details once investigations into the accident are complete. Meanwhile, funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the families and the club in the coming days.
