Zimbabwe is set to send an 11-member team to the Dakar Youth Olympic Games, with exactly 50 days remaining before the historic event gets underway in Senegal.
The Zimbabwean team, which was unveiled two months ago, will compete in seven sporting disciplines, with cyclist Rohnan Nicholson and swimmer Alexis Johnsen among the country’s leading medal hopes.
Nicholson and Johnsen have already won regional and continental medals and will be seeking to build on that success when they take on the world’s best young athletes in Dakar.
The contingent will also compete in athletics, judo, equestrian, coastal rowing and triathlon.
The Games will run from 31 October to 13 November and will mark the first Olympic event to be staged on African soil.
The event is expected to provide Zimbabwe’s young athletes with an opportunity to gain international experience while competing on one of the biggest stages in youth sport.
