The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested 12 suspects in connection with an illegal sugar repackaging syndicate operating from a backyard in Waterfalls, Harare, after seizing 10 tonnes of sugar during a raid, yesterday.
In a statement, ZACC said the operation had exposed unlawful activities involving the repackaging of sugar, raising concerns about the protection of trademarks and the integrity of products sold to consumers.
“ZACC has uncovered a backyard sugar repackaging syndicate in Waterfalls, Harare, following a raid that resulted in the seizure of 10 tonnes of sugar and the arrest of 12 suspects,” the commission said.
The commission said the suspects would be brought before the courts to answer to the allegations, adding that the investigation was part of efforts to combat unlawful commercial practices and protect legitimate businesses.
“We will continue to investigate and take appropriate action against individuals and syndicates suspected of engaging in activities that violate the law. Businesses must operate within the legal framework and respect the trademarks of legitimate producers,” ZACC said.
ZACC said it remained committed to working with relevant authorities to identify and deal with suspected offenders, while urging businesses to comply with laws governing the handling, packaging and sale of products.
“Protecting consumers and ensuring fair business practices require vigilance and cooperation. We urge members of the public to report suspected illegal activities to the relevant authorities so that appropriate investigations can be conducted,” the commission said.
The suspects are expected to appear in court facing charges of contravening the Trademarks Act, as investigations into the alleged operation continue.
The seizure highlights the risks associated with the unauthorised repackaging of branded goods, which can undermine consumer confidence and expose legitimate manufacturers to losses.
