Mpofu claims gold as elite runners shine at Old Mutual Harare Marathon

Olympian Isaac Mpofu reaffirmed his status as Zimbabwe’s leading long-distance runner after powering to victory in the 42-kilometre race at the Old Mutual Harare Marathon on Sunday. More than 3 000 athletes and fitness enthusiasts participated in this year’s edition, but it was the elite competitors who ultimately stole the spotlight.

Mpofu, the national marathon record holder, delivered a commanding performance marked by endurance and tactical discipline. Composed from the outset, he gradually broke away from the leading pack before asserting dominance in the closing stages of the race.

He crossed the finish line in two hours and 18 minutes, two minutes ahead of Owen Slowly, while Blessing Waison claimed third place.

“Not an easy race. I had to fight, but the good thing is I had control and I know the course well. That helped me. I just had to stay strong and ahead of the pack,” said Mpofu.

In the women’s race, Kenyan athlete Sylvia Kwambai clinched gold in a tightly contested finish, narrowly beating Ethel Sibanda and Rutendo Nyahora by a single second.

“The race was very tight. We stayed together for about 30 kilometres before I decided to push. I managed to hold on, but it was a very difficult race on a tough course,” said Kwambai.

Organisers expressed satisfaction with the continued growth of the marathon, which is increasingly drawing international participation while maintaining strong local representation.

“We are happy with the turnout and with how this marathon has grown into a star attraction. You can see from the line-up that we now have many international athletes. This race is also a qualifier for major international events such as the Two Oceans Marathon,” said Old Mutual Zimbabwe Group Marketing and Public Affairs Executive, Lillian Mbayiwa.

Beyond competition, the marathon also doubled as a fitness and health expo, offering participants access to a variety of wellness and lifestyle services, further cementing its place as one of Zimbabwe’s premier sporting events.
