ZiG30m boost for Chilonga bridge

A ZiG30 million allocation for the construction of Chilonga Bridge in the 2026 National Budget has reignited hope among communities in Chiredzi South, who have endured years of dangerous crossings over the Runde River to access essential services.

For decades, residents from Chikombedzi, Malipati and Gezani have depended on makeshift boats to reach Chiredzi town. The journey is especially perilous during the rainy season, when water levels surge and the river becomes treacherous.

“It is very difficult when the river is flooded. This is the only way we can access services in town. During heavy rains, crossing by boat is dangerous because we risk being swept away,” said one commuter.

Residents say the crossing remains a critical lifeline for thousands, yet lives have already been lost due to the absence of a proper bridge.

“Many people depend on this crossing, and lives have been lost. Urgent intervention is needed,” another resident warned.

The presence of crocodiles and hippos in the Runde River further heightens the dangers faced by travellers, particularly schoolchildren, traders and patients seeking medical assistance.

Community members have also appealed for the rehabilitation of a damaged causeway that previously offered a safer alternative during periods of low water levels.

“As we wait for the bridge, restoring the causeway would greatly improve access to Chiredzi and reduce reliance on boats,” another commuter said.

Despite the ongoing hardships, the budget allocation has brought a sense of cautious optimism to the region. Many residents believe the funding marks a long-overdue commitment to addressing their transport challenges.

“We are encouraged by the allocation. It gives us confidence that the Government is committed to addressing our challenges,” one resident said.

A local boat operator urged authorities to move swiftly in implementing the project.

“What we now want is for construction to begin as soon as possible. We hope the funds will be released without delay,” he said.

The ZiG30 million will finance initial civil works for the long-awaited Chilonga Bridge, a development expected to dramatically improve safety, connectivity and access to critical services for communities in Chiredzi South.
