Zimbabwe moved into a commanding position in the one-off test against Bangladesh after another impressive all-round performance left the visitors still trailing by 230 runs at the close of day two at Harare Sports Club.
The Chevrons built on their strong overnight position of 136 for one to post a formidable first-innings total of 426, thanks to a superb maiden test century from Innocent Kaia.
Kaia, who resumed the day on a half-century, produced a composed and patient innings to register his first test hundred, laying the foundation for Zimbabwe’s highest total of the match. Captain Craig Ervine added a valuable 60, while Wessly Madhevere remained unbeaten on 77 to ensure the hosts finished with a commanding score.
Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam was the standout performer with the ball, claiming seven wickets, but received little support from the rest of the bowling attack as Zimbabwe maintained control throughout their innings.
Former Zimbabwe fast bowler Prosper Tsvanhu praised the team’s display, highlighting both the batting effort and the late breakthrough with the ball.
“It was a brilliant day altogether. The guys continued from where they left off on the first day, led by Innocent Kaia, and that wicket at the end of the day was priceless,” said Tsvanhu.
In reply, Bangladesh negotiated a tricky period before stumps but lost opener Shadman Islam for nine as Zimbabwe struck an early blow.
The tourists closed the day still 230 runs behind Zimbabwe’s first-innings total, leaving them with a mountain to climb on Day Three as they seek to avoid the follow-on.
With momentum firmly on their side, Zimbabwe will head into the third day looking to press home their advantage and move closer to a memorable Test victory on home soil.
