Min. of Health intensifies Breast Cancer Awareness….As it offers free screening services

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has intensified efforts to promote early detection of breast cancer through free screening services and public awareness initiatives aimed at encouraging people to seek timely medical attention.

The campaign, held at Kaguvi Building in Harare, yesterday, was presided over by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Aspect Maunganidze, who emphasised the importance of early detection in improving treatment outcomes and saving lives.

“Early detection is one of our most important tools in the fight against breast cancer. We must encourage people to come forward for screening and seek medical attention promptly because identifying the disease early can improve the chances of successful treatment,” he said.

He said the ministry remained committed to raising awareness and promoting timely access to appropriate healthcare, adding that community outreach programmes played an important role in connecting people with essential services.

“Breast cancer awareness must go beyond simply sharing information. We need to turn that awareness into action by ensuring that people understand the importance of screening and can access the healthcare services they need,” Dr Maunganidze said.

The Permanent Secretary also commended healthcare workers who contributed to the campaign, recognising their role in delivering screening services and educating participants on the importance of preventive healthcare.

“I extend my sincere appreciation to our healthcare workers for their dedication and commitment in making this initiative possible. Their work is essential in ensuring that communities receive the information, support and services required to protect their health,” he said.

Dr Maunganidze encouraged members of the public to take advantage of available screening opportunities and urged communities to work together in promoting awareness and reducing delays in seeking medical care.

“Let us join hands in turning awareness into action and hope into healthier lives. Every person who takes the initiative to get screened is taking an important step towards protecting their health,” he said.

The campaign forms part of broader efforts to strengthen public health education, promote preventive care and improve access to essential health services. Breast cancer awareness initiatives encourage early assessment of suspicious breast changes and timely referral for diagnosis and treatment.
