Support surges for Constitutional Amendment No. 3

Momentum continues to build ahead of the anticipated parliamentary debate on the Constitutional Amendment Number 3 Bill, with growing support emerging from various sectors as the public consultation phase draws to a close.

With only a few weeks left before the Bill is tabled for its first reading in the National Assembly, stakeholders are increasingly endorsing the proposed changes, chief among them the extension of the electoral cycle from five to seven years.

Supporters of the Bill argue that the extended term will strengthen continuity in governance and ensure full implementation of development programmes under the Second Republic.

Ruling party affiliates, including Teachers4ED and Varume VaneHutano4ED, have publicly declared their backing, citing visible progress in key sectors such as education and rural development.

“We strongly support the Constitutional Amendment Number 3 Bill because we have witnessed tremendous improvements in the education sector under the leadership of President Mnangagwa. We are placing our weight and saying yes, let us increase the cycle from five to seven years so that our leaders have more time to implement their vision.

“More schools are being constructed, there is modernisation of infrastructure and improved connectivity, helping to bridge the digital divide between rural and urban communities as we move towards Vision 2030,” said Teachers4ED Chairperson Ropafadzo Matemavi.

Varume VaneHutano4ED Chairperson Fletcher Dhamiyano echoed similar sentiments.

“We are throwing our weight behind the Bill because we need to see the completion of developmental processes under the leadership of President Mnangagwa. Government is supporting communities through various initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods, especially in rural communities,” he said.

The 90-day public consultation period for the Bill ends on May 17, paving the way for its presentation and first reading in the National Assembly.
