Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira, met Germany’s Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs, Johann Wadephul, in New York yesterday, where they reaffirmed their longstanding bilateral relations and pledged to deepen cooperation across key sectors, as both countries seek mutual support in the upcoming United Nations Security Council elections scheduled for 3 June 2026.
According to Prof. Murwira, the meeting underscored the strength of ties between Zimbabwe and Germany, which were established in 1980 and have continued to grow over the years.
“The discussions reaffirmed the strong and enduring relations between Zimbabwe and Germany and highlighted our shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest,” Prof. Murwira said.
The Foreign Affairs Minister expressed Zimbabwe’s appreciation for Germany’s constructive engagement with Africa and acknowledged the European nation’s support in development cooperation, humanitarian assistance, climate action, water and sanitation programmes, food security initiatives and disaster recovery efforts.
“Zimbabwe values Germany’s continued support and engagement. We are committed to strengthening mutually beneficial partnerships, expanding trade and investment opportunities, and advancing cooperation on regional and global issues through dialogue, mutual respect and shared prosperity,” he said.
The meeting also focused on growing economic ties between the two countries, with both sides noting the positive trajectory of trade relations.
Prof. Murwira highlighted the increasing presence of Zimbabwean products on the German market, including tobacco, ferro-alloys, citrus fruits, berries and other horticultural products.
“The growth in Zimbabwean exports to Germany demonstrates the potential that exists for further economic cooperation and increased market access for our products,” he said.
The ministers also discussed cooperation within multilateral institutions and exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern.
Both countries are seeking each other’s support in the forthcoming United Nations Security Council elections, a development that reflects the growing diplomatic engagement between Zimbabwe and Germany.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of engagements in New York and forms part of Zimbabwe’s broader efforts to strengthen international partnerships and promote economic diplomacy.
