Beitbridge urban expansion begins

Government has officially launched servicing works for the new Central Business District (CBD) Extension in Beitbridge, in a development aimed at advancing the town’s urban renewal and economic expansion agenda.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Monday, forms part of efforts to modernise Beitbridge and reinforce its status as Zimbabwe’s key border gateway town.

Speaking at the event, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Matabeleland South Province, Albert Nguluvhe, said the project is a strategic investment designed to respond to rising demand for commercial space in the fast-growing border town.

He said the existing central business district has reached its expansion capacity, necessitating the development of a new, modern commercial centre.

“The current central business district has reached its expansion limits. It is therefore necessary to develop a new modern commercial centre that responds to the increasing economic activity in Beitbridge,” said Minister Nguluvhe.

He added that the project aligns with national development priorities that emphasise infrastructure-led growth and economic transformation.

“Beyond physical infrastructure, this project is about creating investment opportunities, generating employment and improving livelihoods for communities,” he said.

The Municipality of Beitbridge has contracted Tiger Eye to carry out the servicing works, which include road construction, water reticulation systems, sewer infrastructure and stormwater drainage.

According to the project schedule, servicing is expected to be completed within six to nine months, with commercial development projected to begin in early 2027.

The CBD Extension will consist of 33 commercial stands earmarked for developments such as a medical centre, shopping complexes, a recreation facility, retail outlets and parking infrastructure. The area is expected to evolve into a modern commercial hub featuring multi-storey buildings of at least four floors.

“The vision is to develop a well-planned and modern commercial hub that reflects the strategic importance of Beitbridge in regional trade and logistics,” said the minister.

The project is being implemented under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which prioritises resilient infrastructure as a key driver towards Vision 2030 and Zimbabwe’s attainment of upper-middle-income economy status.

“Infrastructure development remains central to economic growth. Proper servicing of land is essential to unlock meaningful development,” he said.

Minister Nguluvhe also called for cooperation among government institutions, the private sector and local authorities to ensure the timely and successful completion of the project.

Providing an update on progress, contractor Tiger Eye said road construction is 20 percent complete, water infrastructure stands at 15 percent, sewer works at 10 percent, and overall project completion is estimated at 15 percent.

“We are committed to delivering the project within the agreed timeframe. Work is progressing steadily across all components,” said a company representative.

The launch of the CBD Extension servicing marks a significant milestone in Beitbridge’s urban development trajectory and is expected to accelerate the town’s transformation into a modern commercial centre.
