Police Inspector arrested over  drug trafficking

A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) inspector has been arrested after being found in possession of 220 kilogrammes of mbanje twists valued at approximately US$19 000 at a roadblock along the Masvingo–Beitbridge Highway.

The accused, Pikirai Dade Hakata (53), who is based in Harare, was arrested, on Sunday, at Lundi River Bridge after allegedly fleeing from a police roadblock.

According to State papers, Hakata was driving a silver Toyota Aqua, registration number AGN 8751, when he was stopped at the roadblock at around 3am. He reportedly identified himself as a police inspector and told officers that he was carrying sausages.

Police officers became suspicious and gave chase after Hakata allegedly drove off at high speed. He was intercepted about five kilometres away following a pursuit by police officers in a Fortuner GD6.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of 220kg of mbanje twists concealed in the luggage.

Hakata appeared before Masvingo magistrate Innocent Bepura, on Thursday, together with his co-accused, Ringisai Mapirwe (41). The court denied Hakata bail.

Testifying in court, State witness, Collen Chirema, said the accused was stopped by Constable Rice at the roadblock before fleeing the scene.

The arrest has drawn comment from members of the community, who expressed concern over the involvement of law enforcement officers in drug-related cases.

A Masvingo resident, who declined to be named, said such incidents undermine public confidence in institutions tasked with enforcing the law.

Another resident said the case highlighted the need for continued vigilance and accountability within law enforcement agencies.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has continued to intensify operations targeting drug trafficking and substance abuse, including roadblocks, intelligence-led raids, and community awareness programmes. Police have repeatedly said they will not hesitate to arrest any individuals involved in drug-related offences, regardless of their position, as part of ongoing efforts to curb drug and substance abuse in the country.

The matter was remanded to a later date pending further investigations.
